Getting the Most Out of LinkedIn

I, like many of you, are on LinkedIn.  It is a great tool for networking and meeting new people.  It is also a significant part of your branding strategy, whether you know it or not.

Peter Clayton over at Total Picture Radio has an interview with Shally Steckerl.  He is the Chief Cyberslueth of JobMachine.  Shally is an expert in recruiting and talent management.  I picked up some great tips on making the LinkedIn experience better for me and my organization.

If you're a subscriber or regular visitor to this blog, I would be honored to connect with you on LinkedIn.

  1. Hi Rich,
Thanks for commenting on my blog. Your insights about LinkedIn reflected my thoughts from some time ago. I used to think of LinkedIn as a grown up MySpace. In the last year I have begun to see it a little differently. The following are my thoughts:
    • It has made sense of network in one spot. This doesn’t mean that I couldn’t do it somewhere else, but it does give me a convenient spot.
    • Some many people are connecting there, so I can’t help but want to be there for book sales, subtle marketing of my other services and getting feedback on things I’m working on.
    • I’ve been able to help friends in their job searches.
    • It has given me some (not all) control over what’s being said about me in cyberspace. In other words, when somebody does a Google search on me LinkedIn will probably be one of the first hits.
    • I’m still learning about how to use it to the fullest.
Shally’s interview from my post has definitely helped me appreciate LinkedIn more.

  2. Hi, Eric:
I am a Director of Executive Development for Team Builders Plus, and am on Linked In, but quite frankly I do not totally understand the benefits of Linked In. I tend to accept others who ask me to be linked to them, but have not really used linked in as a sales or marketing or networking tool for myself. Am I missing something?
    Rich Kolodgie
