Why do you think most
\njob-seekers trust the status quo approach to looking for new employment?<\/span><\/h1>\n

No one is
\ntaught job hunting in school so many job hunters get their job searching<\/a> advice
\nfrom a trusted family member or friend who they think has great job. They want
\nto know how he or she was able to do it so they can replicate the same steps.
\nUnfortunately, that advice is always outdated as they\u2019ve probably have held
\nthat job for five or more years and even worse, it may be the only job they
\nhave ever had.<\/p>\n

You want to
\ntalk to someone how is constantly job hunting. Ask them how they are getting
\nnoticed? What is working and what is not working? I\u2019ve had 5 jobs in 24 months
\nand I learned a lot as I was constantly on the hunt. And I\u2019m still learning<\/a>
\nmore.  But the big difference is that
\nemployers are hiring differently than they have in the past.<\/p>\n

A decade ago,
\nemployers hired based on an employee\u2019s potential. If you came from a good
\nschool or had a college degree, then you\u2019d be worth taking a chance on. But now
\nemployers don\u2019t have time or budget to train new employees, which means job
\nseekers need to come in with value on day one. 
\nIt\u2019s on the job seeker to pay to get their own training, have to find
\ntheir own way to build up their own skill set, and create their own working
\nexperience<\/a>. Showing you can come to work the first day with value is the
\ndifference between getting noticed or not by a hiring manger in today\u2019s
\neconomy.<\/p>\n

In your book you discuss your
\nstruggles with depression. It seems like depression would go hand-in-hand with
\na loss of a job, what advice would you give to someone in that spot?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, I was unemployed for a
\nyear and suffering depression and the number one thing is getting help. Depression
\nsucks the life out of you, and without help from family and therapy I may still
\nbe there.  Talking about it helped a lot
\nand allowed me to look at my situation in a new light. <\/p>\n

If you find yourself in this
\nsituation reach out to family, friends, and professional help. My therapist
\ngave me the tools to get back on my feet. There shouldn\u2019t be shame associated
\nwith losing your job. It happens. It\u2019s life. I realized I was one of millions
\nsuffering from lack of employment and it gave me encouragement to try job
\nhunting in different ways.  I eventually
\nmade job hunting my number one focus, stopped blaming others for my problems,
\nstopped blaming the economy for poor job prospects, and taught myself how to
\njob hunt subversively. <\/p>\n

Is it important to know what\u2019s
\nmost important in your life when considering the next opportunity?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a
\nhuge key to job hunting. I\u2019ve job hunted for different reasons based on my and
\nmy family\u2019s needs. I\u2019ve taken jobs just for the paycheck, I\u2019ve taken jobs for
\nthe experience, and I\u2019ve even taken jobs for the abundance of vacation days it
\nprovided.   Each served a different
\npurpose of my life at different times.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s crucial
\nto recognize where you stand in your career<\/a>. If you are entry level, go for the
\nexperience. Or better yet, go for what excites you or what you want to learn
\nabout.  And realize that every job you
\nland may end quicker than you think it will, so always be building up your
\nskillset so you are instantly employable in case you get laid off. By taking
\nafter-hour classes, networking outside your office, and reading your career\u2019s
\nindustry-focused magazines you\u2019ll begin to learn what it is that you want from
\nyour career and you\u2019ll also know what it will take to get there. Working on
\nyour career doesn\u2019t just stop when you leave the office.<\/p>\n

Where do you see the U.S. job
\nmarket heading in the next 3-5 years? Will people get more subversive in their
\napproach to finding employment?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think the
\njob market will be improving and I see no other way to job hunt than to be a
\nbit subversive. You have to make yourself a big fish in this huge sea of job
\napplicants. This can be done by branding yourself correctly, working online or
\nfor free to earn a reputation, or finding ways to be noticed within your career
\nniche.  If you are labeled as an expert
\nat something, even if it is just one tiny task or responsibility, this goes a
\nlong way to get employed. Someone out there will have a need for this expertise
\nand is willing to pay top dollar for an employee to fill it.  If you recognize what these skill sets are
\nwith your career, you\u2019ll be no longer be a job hunter, but you\u2019ll be head-hunted
\ninstead by well-connected recruiters and hiring managers. The ideal situation
\nfor anyone looking to further their career.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give the
\nperson, just out of college, trying to land their first job?<\/strong><\/p>\n

With hard work comes experience, with
\nexperience comes opportunities, and with opportunities comes luck.  And with all of these four things working for
\nyou, then comes wealth. To be a graduate shows you\u2019ve got the ability to work
\nhard, but most graduates lack experience that makes them the in-demand hires
\nthey want to be. <\/p>\n

I\u2019d recommend freelancing online via website like odesk.com<\/a> and elance.com<\/a> to
\nearn real-world experience as quickly as possible and to prove you are a self-motivated
\ncandidate. This is also a great way to learn what you like within your career,
\nlearn what skills are in demand, and make a little money on while you job hunt.
\nFurthermore, they\u2019ll have actually talking points to discuss in future
\ninterviews that can help them make a great first impression.<\/p>\n
