{"id":454,"date":"2009-04-24T10:01:53","date_gmt":"2009-04-24T10:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epicliving.com\/epic\/the-9010-leadership-development-principleagain\/"},"modified":"2009-04-24T10:01:53","modified_gmt":"2009-04-24T10:01:53","slug":"the-9010-leadership-development-principleagain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.epicliving.com\/epic\/the-9010-leadership-development-principleagain\/","title":{"rendered":"The 90\/10 Leadership Development Principle-Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote the following post some time ago, but I think it bears re-posting today:<\/p>\n<p><em>So many principles, so little time:).&#0160; Seriously, I want to tackle<br \/>\nthe 90\/10 principle (10% is the unexpected good or bad, 90% is what you<br \/>\nchoose) in relation to our life and career.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For many years I was told by mentors and colleagues that the 90\/10<br \/>\nrule was important.&#0160; In the early years, I didn&#39;t want to have the<br \/>\nresponsibility for 90% of my life.&#0160; It seemed so permanent to face the<br \/>\nconsequences of my choices.&#0160; And I certainly didn&#39;t like the idea of<br \/>\nthe 10%.&#0160; Who wants to be at the mercy of the unexpected?&#0160; <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was about 10 years ago that I really became conscious of the<br \/>\nprinciple.&#0160; So much so that it now is a part of my culture.&#0160; I use the<br \/>\nterm conscious because unconscious living leads to incongruent values<br \/>\n(I say exercise is important, but I never do it) or plain old<br \/>\nhypocrisy.&#0160; No judgment here, but you need to be awake.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Here&#39;s why you need to embrace the 90\/10 rule:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>You must embrace, because the 90\/10 rule embraces you.&#0160; Like it or not. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When you embrace, your leadership quality goes way up.&#0160; All of sudden you think before you act. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You must tame the beast inside.&#0160; Call it misplaced ambition,<br \/>\npreoccupation with the opinions of others or greed.&#0160; When you realize<br \/>\nthat 90% of life is what you choose, you&#39;ll think twice about walking<br \/>\nall over your co-workers. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You&#39;ll begin to think about your foundation.&#0160; Is it sand or stone?&#0160; When the unexpected comes what will keep you anchored? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Embracing the rule will simplify things.&#0160; It won&#39;t make life easy,<br \/>\nbut it will make you decide what&#39;s most important in career and life. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You&#39;ll make the breakthrough to realizing that no one\/organization<br \/>\ncan make you happy.&#0160; Happiness is a choice (there&#39;s that 90% again) and<br \/>\nonly you can make this one. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You&#39;ll stop being afraid of your destiny and get on with the mission. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Oscar for best <strong>motion picture <\/strong>should be your life.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Don&#39;t awaken to an accidental career or life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote the following post some time ago, but I think it bears re-posting today: So many principles, so little time:).&#0160; Seriously, I want to tackle the 90\/10 principle (10% is the unexpected good or bad, 90% is what you choose) in relation to our life and career.
