Regardless of your endeavor, you probably have at one time or another thought about hitting it big.\u00a0 Natural as the air you breathe it seems.\u00a0 In many respects big is a good thing-if it is a part of your destiny.\u00a0 For example,\u00a0Nelson Mandela<\/a>\u00a0was meant to have worldwide notoriety and focus.\u00a0 He was the right man for the journey South Africa was in.\u00a0 It’s also quite a statement how\u00a0he released power, while some of his contemporaries held (and are still holding) on.\u00a0 See Robert Mugabe<\/a>\u00a0and Zimbabwe on this.\u00a0 In an ironic way leadership plays out like this everyday in organizations across the globe.<\/p>\n

So as we hear the music playing our tune, it’s easy to embrace the big.<\/p>\n

I’ve been asked about Oprah<\/a>, about fame, about money, about feeling the love.\u00a0 But rarely am I asked about the input, the mission, or the pain.\u00a0 Maybe there’s no surprise here, since we are enamored with the output.\u00a0 If I were not careful, I could easily miss the small while going for the big.\u00a0 Thankfully, humility is now in my blood work.\u00a0 Wasn’t always this way.<\/p>\n

Here’s why the small is most important:<\/p>\n

  1. Hitting the big is very temporal.\u00a0 Hitting the small refines your soul. It will keep you focused.<\/li>\n
  2. The small people are the biggest people.<\/li>\n
  3. Those who are only fascinated by the big will leave you in a heartbeat when the party is over.<\/li>\n
  4. The small allows you to serve from a perspective of reality and measurable outcome.<\/li>\n
  5. The small will stay with you come good or bad.\u00a0 The small knows dedication.<\/li>\n
  6. The small will pave a way for greatness and a measurable legacy.<\/li>\n
  7. The small reminds you (daily) that life truly is a moment by moment game.<\/li>\n
  8. The small will not detour you from your destiny.<\/li>\n
