{"id":567,"date":"2008-06-16T04:11:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-16T04:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epicliving.com\/epic\/the-traditional-book-publishing-quandry\/"},"modified":"2008-06-16T04:11:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-16T04:11:00","slug":"the-traditional-book-publishing-quandry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.epicliving.com\/epic\/the-traditional-book-publishing-quandry\/","title":{"rendered":"The Traditional Book Publishing Quandary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traditional book publishers are in a quandary.&#0160; I won&#39;t bore you with my thoughts on what I&#39;ve learned since the release of my book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Waking-Up-Corporate-America-Secrets\/dp\/159932055X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1202701395&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Waking Up in Corporate America<\/a>.&#0160; But one thing is clear, executives at traditional book publishers should consult their counterparts in the music business.&#0160; Their story is very similar.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote late last year on the approach\/expectations for my book.&#0160; You can read that post <a href=\"http:\/\/epicliving.blogs.com\/epic_living\/2007\/10\/making-the-best.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now comes a piece from Dave Balter (thanks, Guy for pointing out on<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/guykawasaki?page=3\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>) entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/conversationstarter.hbsp.com\/2008\/06\/an_open_letter_to_the_book_pub.html\" target=\"_blank\">How the Book Publishing Industry Should Reinvent Itself<\/a><\/em>.&#0160; Dave&#39;s thoughts are informed and point to a different, if not better future, for authors and publishers.<\/p>\n<p>The downside is change is never easy, and publishers are holding on tight to the old model.&#0160; <a href=\"http:\/\/harpercollins.com\" target=\"_blank\">Harper Collins<\/a> seems to be bucking this trend, as evidenced by this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/04\/04\/business\/04harper.html?_r=2&amp;oref=slogin&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> in the NY Times from earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>As an author, I&#39;m encouraged by the trends.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Traditional book publishers are in a quandary.&#0160; I won&#39;t bore you with my thoughts on what I&#39;ve learned since the release of my book Waking Up in Corporate America.&#0160; But one thing is clear, executives at traditional book publishers should consult their counterparts in the music business.&#0160; Their story is very similar.
